Important Things to Know About Connecticut Correctional Facilities

The state of Connecticut has a crime rate of approximately 2.07 per thousand residents, for violent crimes.
Perhaps you know someone who’s been a victim of such crime, or maybe you know someone who’s been arrested or detained within Connecticut correctional facilities. Either way, it is important to know a little about the system, before you can begin to make things right.
Let’s go over a few things you need to know.

How Many Correctional Facilities Are in Connecticut?

The Connecticut Department of Corrections or the DOC has its headquarters at Wethersfield in Hartford County. On the whole, it has a total of 18 correctional facilities within the state. However, currently, only 14 of these facilities are in operation.
These prisons collectively hold a little over twelve thousand inmates within their cells. The York Correctional Institution is the only correctional facility that is exclusively for female offenders.
Do keep in mind that these are just the state-run facilities. There are also federal correctional facilities, but these are run by the federal government and not the DOC.
So what exactly happens within these facilities? Let’s take a deeper look.

Capital Punishment and Execution Laws

In 2012, capital punishment was completely abolished within the state laws against all future crimes. However, even prior to this there had only been one execution within the state since 1976. This happened in 2005, where the defendant was executed through lethal injection.
Since then, offenders charged convicted of capital felonies can only be sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of parole. Similarly, depending on the kind of felony one is convicted of, you may have varying degrees of prison sentences and fines. If someone is a persistent offender, they are likely to have a longer sentence.

How to Communicate with Someone Who’s Been Incarcerated

If someone you care about is currently doing time within a facility, you can communicate with them via letter. There is no bar on how many letters you can write or how many they can send, so it is an excellent way to reassure or keep in touch.
However, be sure to clearly state the inmate’s name and the address of the correctional facility on your envelope, before you mail it. Here is a comprehensive list of correctional facilities with their addresses.

What to Do if You Have a Friend or Loved in Connecticut Correctional Facilities

Being apart from a loved one can be extremely difficult, especially when they’ve been accused of a crime. However, you do not have to suffer. If you know someone who’s being held within the Connecticut correctional facilities, but cannot afford the bail, know that you have options.
